Cheaper alternatives to borrowing, in order

Eight routes ordered by cost, starting with the free ones: payment plans, utility assistance, earned wage access, nonprofit counselling and credit union loans. Plus when borrowing genuinely is the better move.

The short version

  • Work down the list and stop at the first option that fits. The first four cost nothing.
  • For comparison, $1,000 at 29.99% over 12 months costs $169.76 in interest.
  • A free payment plan with whoever you owe is the most commonly missed option of all.
  • If the shortfall repeats every month, a loan postpones the problem rather than solving it.

Work down this list, stop at the first that fits

Borrowing is rarely the only option, and it is almost never the cheapest one. The routes below are ordered roughly by cost, starting with the ones that are free.

For reference while you read: $1,000 borrowed at 29.99% APR over 12 months costs $169.76 in interest, at $97.48 a month. That is the number each option below is competing against.

Ask two questions first

  • Can this wait, even by four weeks? Many things that feel urgent can.
  • Is this a one-off, or does the shortfall repeat every month? If it repeats, a loan postpones the problem rather than solving it.

Free, or close to it

Four routes that cost nothing but a phone call, and are routinely overlooked.

A payment plan with whoever you owe

Hospitals, dentists, utilities, mechanics and landlords routinely agree to installments, and a large share of those plans carry no interest at all. Borrowing to pay a bill that would have been split for free is the most common expensive mistake there is. Ask before the due date, not after it reaches collections.

Utility and rental assistance

Energy assistance programs, utility hardship funds, rental assistance and community action agencies exist in most areas and are chronically underused. Dialling 211 in the United States reaches a referral service that knows what is available where you live.

Earned wage access at work

Many employers now let you draw wages you have already earned before payday, free or for a small flat fee. Some also run hardship funds or interest-free staff loans that are never advertised. Payroll or HR will know.

Nonprofit credit counselling

A free review of your whole position, and counsellors can often negotiate lower rates with existing creditors through a debt management plan. Use a nonprofit accredited by a recognised national body, and never pay an upfront fee to a firm promising debt settlement.

Cheaper credit than we offer

If you qualify for either of these, take it. Both are priced well below our range.

A credit union small-dollar loan

Federal credit unions offer payday alternative loans capped far below our rates, over one to twelve months, and many lend to members with imperfect credit. Joining is often a matter of living in an area or working for a particular employer. Ask: do you offer a payday alternative loan, and what would I need to join?

A credit card you already hold

If you have available credit at a purchase APR below what we would offer, use it. A card at 22% costs less than a loan at 29.99% for the same amount over the same period. Cash advances on a card are different: interest usually starts immediately and a fee is added.

Weigh these carefully

Not wrong, but each carries a cost that is easy to underestimate.

Borrowing from family

Usually the cheapest money available and the largest relationship risk. Write down the amount and the repayment dates as you would any agreement. Ambiguity is what damages families, not the loan.

Retirement accounts

A 401(k) loan looks cheap until you leave the job and the balance becomes due, and an early withdrawal can trigger tax and penalties. Speak to a tax professional before using retirement money for a short-term problem.

Options to avoid

Payday loans frequently run above 300% APR and are built around rollovers. Car title loans put at risk the vehicle you need for work. And anyone asking for a fee upfront to release a loan is running a scam, however convincing the paperwork. Our complaints page explains how to report that.

When borrowing is the right answer

Having spent this guide arguing for the alternatives, here is when a loan genuinely is the better move.

A loan makes sense when

  • The need is urgent and the free routes take days or weeks you do not have.
  • You have already been declined by a credit union or a bank.
  • The amount is small, the term is short, and every payment is certain.
  • Not acting costs more: a reconnection fee, a missed shift, an eviction filing.

It does not when

  • The shortfall repeats every month.
  • The payment only fits by cutting something essential.
  • You qualify for one of the cheaper routes above.
  • You are borrowing to repay another loan taken for the same reason.

Questions on this topic

What is the cheapest alternative to a loan?

A free payment plan direct with whoever you owe, because it costs nothing at all. Hospitals, utilities, dentists and mechanics routinely agree to installments, and many carry no interest.

How do I find local assistance?

Dialling 211 in the United States connects you to a referral service covering utility help, rent assistance and community programs. Much of this funding goes unclaimed each year.

Is a credit union loan really cheaper?

Usually yes. Federal credit unions offer small-dollar payday alternative loans capped far below the rates online lenders charge, and many will lend to members with imperfect credit.

Should I use a credit card instead?

If your card's purchase APR is below what a lender would offer you, yes. A cash advance on a card is different, because interest typically starts immediately and a fee is added.

Will using a credit counsellor affect future applications?

Not with us. A period of nonprofit counselling is not a decline reason, and addressing the underlying problem usually makes a later application stronger.

When is borrowing actually the right choice?

When the need is urgent, the cheaper routes take longer than you have, the amount is small and short-term, and not acting would cost more than the interest will.
